Where are We ?
This is the short version of this card:
Botany Bay Colony is one of many colony worlds located in the expanse of deep space between galaxies known as the Outer Rim, or Deep Black. Colony worlds in the deep black are located in naturally occurring dust clouds devoid of stars. Clusters of worlds of all types and sizes can be found in these extra galactic nebula. These loose systems get their energy from the gas clouds, large gas giants, and bleed over from slip space. Travel though Slip Space is the only known way to travel the vast distances between galaxies.
Extra Galactic drifts, such as the one Botany Bay calls home are almost always at the nexus of ‘knots’ in the slipstream. Travel though the stream is limited by the capacity of the slip drive. Currently slip capable ships are limited in size and mass to 100 meters in any dimension, and 450 Metric Tons. You would have arrived from your home galaxy or system aboard a slip capable vessel.
Slip Drives are easily retrofitted onto starships of many types, and its common to see slip capable vessels from many diverse races in the deep black nexuses of slips space, such as Botany Bay. Slip Drives may not be common among your people, or may be experimental.
The unique properties of slip space make travel less a matter of distance, than familiarity. Thus, travel to the station to other locations can be very quick or antagonizing slow, with many variables. Also, the unique nature of slip travel almost always puts travelers in the far reaches of the densely populated galaxies, where ships rely on other interstellar drive technology to finish their journey.
The size and mass limitations of slip travel create a unique economics in pan-galactic trade. Due to the relatively low volume of slip capable vessels, only the more rare and expensive commodities are traded pan galacticly. It also make Pan Galactic warfare extremely problematic, as the defender almost always holds the advantage, as their vessels are not limited to the size restrictions of slip capable vessels.
